Endgame Siege · Final Title Update
Gogmazios, Specter of War: Full Hunt Guide
Gogmazios, the Specter of War, is a three-phase HR9 siege (after HR100) with a ~400,000 HP pool — the most-farmed endgame monster. Burn away the tar with Fire, punish with Dragon, and use the arena's heavy weapons to clear it in under 10 minutes.
Gogmazios, Specter of War: Full Hunt Guide
The final title update brings Gogmazios, the "Specter of War" — a colossal Elder Dragon draped in sticky black tar that even wields an ancient weapon on its back you can turn against it. Its quest, "Specter of Their Sins," is a High-Rank 9-star slay mission available after HR 100. It's a three-phase siege across multiple areas of the Oilwell Basin, and one of the most engaging hunts in the game.
Slaying Gogmazios yields Mutated Armaments to forge its armour and upgrade Gogma Artian weapons — some of the best endgame gear available. It may not be the toughest hunt, but it will be the most farmed, so this guide breaks down every move, how to counter it, and how to farm efficiently. First, the basics.
Overview & Scaling
Gogmazios is a siege monster with an enormous HP pool — around 400,000 health in the event quest. The fight supplies plenty of heavy weaponry and environmental damage to whittle that down; used well, with good strategy and a little luck, you can cut hunt time below 10 minutes. Its health does not scale down with fewer hunters, so bring a team or Support NPCs. Four fixed NPCs always appear — you can add up to 3 more players or Support Hunters for an 8-hunter party.
Shifting Elemental Weakness
Gogmazios is covered head-to-tail in thick tar armour, giving it low hitzone values until you soften it. It's very resistant to most damage but extremely weak to Dragon once the tar is dealt with.
- Fire is key in its initial solid state — fire damage burns away and softens the tar.
- Once sections are burned off, it shifts to a liquid/gaseous state, where Dragon becomes dramatically effective.
Recommended approach:
- Solo: bring both Fire and Dragon. Fire only in phase 1, swap between Fire and Dragon in phase 2 as it changes state, Dragon only in phase 3.
- Team: one or two hunters focus Fire in phases 1–2, everyone else runs Dragon throughout for the best uptime in its liquid/gaseous state.
Weak Points
The best targets are the wingarm talons and the head, especially after the tar is softened by fire. The back and chest are also weak — but the back is only reachable when Gogmazios is toppled. Teal-coloured ancient Gogma materials lodged on its body take extra damage and can be destroyed for bonus materials — prioritise them.
Phase 1 — Movesets
- Double-Wingarm Forward Slam — rears up and crashes both forearms down; has range and tracking, so don't backpedal. Dive to the side or under its belly, or perfect-block with a shield.
- Side Slam (one arm) — lifts one wingarm and slams to the side; it can turn sharply and sweep forward, and may chain a slam from each arm. Dodge into the monster rather than away. Both slams leave the arms briefly stuck — a window to punish.
- Body Sweep + Tail Combo — a Gore-Magala-style back-of-arm sweep into a tail swipe. In liquid/gaseous state both leave exploding oil patches. Neither has huge range: stand directly under the torso and both pass over you — a great time to hit the chest or legs. At range, roll straight back or perfect-block the tail.
- Forward Oil Beam — it hunkers down, neck recoiling, then fires a concentrated oil laser straight ahead (near one-shot). Sprint or dodge to its side near a foreleg and keep attacking; Guard Up is required to block it. There's recovery afterward for free hits.
- 180° Oil Sweep — it curls its head and body, then sweeps an oil beam in a broad half-circle across the front. The safe zone is behind or very close to Gogmazios. If caught out front, Superman dive for i-frames, or perfect-block with Guard Up.
Staying near the wingarms avoids most attacks and keeps you in punish range for the lasers.
Environmental damage: grab a Sparkflint and light the gas outlets on the ground — each deals 8,000+ damage (three total). The overhanging boulder in the center drops for 4,000+ and a big opening. But the core strategy is Fire + Dragon on a single wingarm to keep it in liquid state and topple it repeatedly.
Phase 2 — The Platform & Elderbreak
Once enough damage is dealt, Gogmazios ignites the lower arena and moves to phase 2. Mount your Seikret and climb to the elevated platform. During the transition: sharpen, re-buff, and grab a Chillmantle Bug from the left wall to prevent heat damage.
Stand by the battering-ram lever and aim at the boulder above Gogmazios' head. As his head reaches the platform, drop the boulder to stagger him — his wing spreads and can be hit by the battering ram. Pull the lever, then run to his back to dislodge the Elderbreak (the rail gun) from his back.
Once it's off, find three Wyvern Milk Fiber nodes on the back wall and connect all three to the Elderbreak to charge the milk cannon. Outdoorsman speeds up carrying (not mandatory); hold R1 to move faster (uses stamina) and press Cross to dodge. A fully charged milk cannon deals 67,000+ damage, usually pushing him straight to phase 3. Wait for the "fully charged" notification — firing early wastes most of the damage. Fire bombs on the right add extra damage, but focusing weapon damage on one wingarm to topple him is often more efficient.
Phase 2 attacks (he's anchored to the ledge):
- Targeted Laser Explosion — targets a player (often the fiber carrier) with a focused laser and a huge, oil-igniting blast. Stay far and dodge (Cross) repeatedly.
- Side-to-Side Laser — a horizontal sweep across the platform with a long wind-up. Stay near him by the ledge and you'll usually be under it.
Phase 3 — Final Showdown
Gogmazios moves to the top of the Forgotten Machineworks, shifts to gaseous state, and flies into the sky with frenzied lasers and fire bombs. Pick up Anti-Wyvern Slinger ammo from his body or the ground and hit him with a fully charged shot. The safe spot is often right under his body — look down and step out of oil patches after each shot. When grounded, keep hitting his wing to keep him down for a longer opening.
- Wing Drag — he swoops low and plows a wing across the arena (Rey-Dau-style), hitting a wide lane. Side-roll out; his wing/head is low afterward — fire a charged Anti-Wyvern shot at the wing joint or face.
- Dive Bomb — picks a target and crashes down (Teostra/Lunastra-style). Sheathe and run perpendicular, then dive/roll away, or time a late backward dodge.
Grounded attacks mix his earlier moves but hit harder, more often, with fire explosions. Use the two Falling Chimney Pillars for openings and hit the blue metal parts lodged on his body when toppled (breaking them drops materials).
The Dragon damage check & Fire Nova: the goal is enough Dragon damage to pass the elemental check — Nadia calls out whether you've kept his power in check. Near the end he flies to center and overheats (tar glows red-hot, distinct roar). If you failed the check, his Fire Nova wipes the party. It's also your best DPS window — dump everything, then sheathe and run. Survive by either hiding behind Fabius's shield or guarding through it yourself (any shield weapon — no Guard Up needed).
When Proof of a Hero plays, he's low — finish him. If he has health left after the first ultimate, expect two or even three Novas; the cycle simply repeats until he dies.
Key Terms
Tar Armour — Gogmazios' coating; burn it with Fire to soften, then punish the exposed body with Dragon.
Elderbreak / Milk Cannon — the rail gun on his back; dislodge it and charge it with three Wyvern Milk Fibers for a 67,000+ damage hit.
Dragon Damage Check — pass it (Nadia confirms) to neutralise the Fire Nova; fail and the Nova wipes the party unless you shield behind Fabius or guard it.
RULE · Quick Takeaway — Fire softens the tar, Dragon does the real damage. Focus one wingarm to topple him, cash in the Sparkflints, boulder, battering ram, and milk cannon, and keep enough Dragon damage flowing to pass the check before the Fire Nova — then farm those Gogma Artian rewards.
